Locals demand justice, hold rally

NONGSTOIN, Aug 30: The murder of a woman hailing from Nongstoin and her maid here has sent shock waves across the town. Various oganisations from across West Khasi Hills have come forward to condemn the killing with youth bodies from the district under the banner of ‘Ka Sur ki Nong West’ on Monday holding a protest rally in Nongstoin in which candles were lit to pay tributes to the departed souls at Nonbah Bridge.
The rally commenced from State Bank of India, Nongstoin Branch, and culminated at Nonbah River Bridge where locals lighted candles on both the edges of the bridge and also organsied a public meeting.
Speakers at the meeting expressed solidarity with the aggrieved families and condemned the incident while demanding that the criminal should be punished accordingly with life imprisonment or should be hanged to death.
Phlesis Syiem (79) and her maid Maitlynti Lyngdoh Marshillong (25) of Tiehsaw were killed in Nongstoin on the night of August 23. Police have arrested one Banphrang Kupar Nongbri (24) of Nongstoin village who has confessed to killing the two women.
