SHILLONG, Sep 14: Around two weeks have passed since several houses in the city started being supplied with turbid water but more trouble is impending as the PHE department has now informed that a pipeline in Upper Shillong has burst in the wake of which there will be no water supply till Thursday evening.
However, the Executive Engineer of Greater Shillong Water Supply Division No-II, in a statement issued here on Tuesday, said that efforts are being made to rid the inconvenience and hopefully normal water supply would begin by Thursday evening.
It was revealed that the pipeline of 750 mm diameter main line had burst at Pomlum village, Upper Shillong, while releasing water in the evening of September 13.
“Due to the breakdown of the 750 mm diameter main line, there will be no water supply till September 16 evening,” the statement said. The areas to be affected include Shillong Municipal Board and Shillong Cantonment Board areas, Nongthymmai and Mawlai.  “All efforts are being made to complete the repair works for restoration of normal water supply by September 16 evening. Inconvenience caused is regretted and people are requested to bear with us,” the statement added said.
It may also be recalled that in many parts of the city, turbid water is being supplied since the beginning of September, whereas this phenomenon was expected to be a two-day affair.
In the statement, the Executive Engineer also clarified that the water quality is still turbid due to commissioning of the newly laid 1000 mm diameter gravity main line.
“The 1000 mm diameter (main line) requires to revert the supply from the existing 750 mm diameter gravity main line,” the Executive Engineer explained in the statement.
