Protest rally over minor’s rape in WKH

NONGSTOIN, Sep 16: Demanding action against the accused in an incident of rape in Nongdiwah, West Khasi Hills, which occurred on August 5, residents of Umyiap area including youths under the banner of ‘Ka Sur U Paidbah ki Nongumyiap’ took out a protest rally on Thursday seeking justice for the victim.
The rally started from Nongdiwah and culminated at Mawiawlang taxi stand where the protesters held a meeting.
People carrying placards were seen and heard shouting slogans demanding punishment for the culprit.
Speakers of the programme included Headman of Nongdiwah, Shotsking Kharbani, leader of Senglongkmie Umyiap area, Pliebiang Wanniang, representative of the NGOs of Umyiap area, Jaiantis Lyngdoh, and others.
One Lokistar Syiem of Nongdiwah village allegedly raped a minor girl from the village and attempted to hang her to death, but the girl, however, escaped.
The accused allegedly even threatened the minor with dire consequences if she confessed to anyone about the incident.
Regardless, the girl informed her parents, who were advised by the doctor at Nongstoin Civil Hospital, where she was being treated, to file a police complaint on this matter.
An FIR was subsequently filed and the accused was arrested by Nongstoin Police.
