SHILLONG, Sep 24: Dismayed by the recent assault cases of youths in West Shillong Constituency, newly-appointed Adviser to the Chief Minister, Ernest Mawrie, has assured of petitioning Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for bolstering public security in critical spots by installing CCTV cameras and ensuring conduct of timely patrols.
According to a statement, Mawrie lamented that the recent incidents have triggered panic among locals.
“The innocent youths are being victimised and the local administration seems to be least bothered by the developments,” the statement read.
Smelling political vendetta, Mawrie said attempts can be made to give the assault cases a communal colour.
He also informed that a delegation of West Shillong leaders will soon call on the chief minister and the Superintendant of Police (City) over the matter. “They will demand all measures to be taken to restore the security in the constituency as a whole with special focus on vulnerable areas,” Mawrie said.
Earlier, West Shillong MLA Mohendro Rapsang had argued that the inadequate presence of streetlights has given rise to anti-social activities, especially under his constituency.
Rangbah Shnong of Lower Mawprem had also suggested that street lights should be repaired immediately so as to esnure a sense of safety in the area.
