SHILLONG, Oct 5: Meghalaya continues to lag behind as far as Aadhaar enrolment is concerned with half of the state’s population yet to be covered under Aadhaar.
Till August 31, out of a total population of 32.88 lakh (the projected population of Meghalaya in 2021), 16.69 lakh have been enrolled under Aadhaar — a saturation percentage of 50.79.
As far as the Aadhaar enrolment of children between the age group of 0-5 years is concerned, a meagre 3.27 per cent have been enrolled under the programme.
Reacting to the figures, Social Welfare Minister, Kyrmen Shylla, on Tuesday, however, said that the Aadhaar enrolment has picked up pace in the state in recent times.
Informing that there are issues of miscommunication, especially in Jaintia Hills, the minister asserted that there are no more religious sentiments, which were earlier reportedly hindering the process.
Shylla also said that the delay usually happens due to many pending applications pertaining to Aadhaar enrolment. He, however, assured that the department is trying to ramp up the enrolment drive across the state.
