Editor,

Through your esteemed daily I would like to inform you that result for the departmental promotion of Fire & Emergency Service, Meghalaya of different post was kept in abeyance till presently for reason best known to the Department but as per information from sources the promotional result for the post of Sub Station officer from the post of Leading Fire man was withheld due to the complaint filed by the senior Leading Fireman to the Director General of Police, Meghalaya because most of the post of the Sub officers was allotted to the Junior cadres. Secondly, the matter was lying in the High Court of Meghalaya for whatever reason. This led to delay in filling up the vacancies in various post in most of the Fire stations in the state and this ultimately hampers the smooth functioning of the Department and for your kind information the Department already has shortage of man power .
The departmental promotion of Fire & Emergency Service in the past few years (span of 10-15 years back) has been in controversies for quite sometimes in the matter relating to superseding of Junior personnel. This has deeply affected the morale of the staff. The Seniority cum merit and Merit cum Seniority was changed from time to time to suit the interests of the favoured candidates. This development has greatly frustrated and confused the personnel, This has consequently affected discipline following which respect to the seniors in the Department which is one of the important aspects in the disciplinary force was compromised.
Therefore I appeal to the Government to set up an inquiry against those who frame the guidelines regarding the departmental promotions and due action should be taken against those who manipulate the same because this is a serious matter which affects the personal wellbeing, self-esteem and professional career of an individual and above all this development has brought a bad reputation to the Department .

Policy for Govt jobs

Editor,

The most important social problem facing society and the state today is not lack of employment avenues but lack of employment generation of which a substantial chunk comes from government and semi-government sectors. The lack of transparency and failing administrative commitment to redefine what set of parameters or benchmarks define the selection of a candidate apart from the regular personal interviews which in every successful candidate’s mind is mostly a skewed interview. So, what benchmarks have those in the Secretariat thought of in generating government employment. My suggestion is that a dedicated job portal covering all government sectors including private sectors would be an innovative step. The number of private offices and business houses here have hardly taken interest in taking locally skilled youths, however, the greatest mishap is lack of a clear-cut employment policy which is why governance suffers. Hope things will bring a positive change ahead.

Step towards gender quality

Editor,

Apropos of the news item published in Shillong Times 18 October, 2021 in the front page under the caption “Three Groups take charge of Mawlai ‘people’s voice,’ I wish to share my views here. The three groups have rightly highlighted the issue of womens’ participation in the dorbar shnong. It is indeed a laudable step that collective efforts is being initiated for taking up the issue of gender equality in the dorbor shnong. In the past there were instances where the affected individuals had raised their voices and sought for legal remedies. The concerned three groups shall not only focus on the rights of the women to vote in the dorbar shnong, but at the same time they should deliberate on allowing women to contest for the office of Rangbah Shnong where under the changed circumstances the nomenclature of the office could suitably be changed. This will ensure a legally enforceable right upon our women, since the social system needs to be transformed with the passage of time and it needs to be in conformity with our constitution and other laws framed thereunder.
