SHILLONG, Oct 22: Mairang will officially become the 12th district of the state by November 10 if no major changes are made, local MLA and Assembly Speaker, Metbah Lyngdoh, told a gathering on Friday.
He was speaking at a self-help group (SHG) mela-cum-health camp organised by the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihood Society at Mairang on Friday.
The MLA informed the public that the delay was caused by the second wave of the pandemic even as he assured them that the upgrade will not be delayed any further.
The Assembly Speaker had expressed happiness that Mairang C&RD Block is now home to as many as 1,440 SHGs and over 100 village organisations.
Earlier this year, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had announced that Mairang will be upgraded into a district by August 15.
Moreover, there are also demands to upgrade Sohra and Dadenggre civil subdivisions into a district.
