SHILLONG, Oct 25: Rotary Club of Orchid City, Shillong, in collaboration with Geetanjali Dance Academy, organised a Polio Awareness Walk to observe the World Polio Day.
According to a statement, the walk was flagged off by assistant governor, Rotary International District 3240, Rtn Kisan Tibrewalla, in the presence of the Club president, Rtn Monica Chanda.
The walk was joined by Rotarians, students and notable civilians, who held banners with slogans and artworks for joint endeavours towards eradication of polio.
“Rotary spearheaded the campaign at a time when there were over 1,000 polio cases a day in 125 countries, paralysing and even killing children. Over the last 35 years, Rotary members, working with communities around the world, have contributed more than USD 2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to the fight to end polio. Today, the number of cases is down by 99.9%,” the statement said.
