TURA, Nov 3: Combined organizations from South Garo Hills on Wednesday took out a public rally in Baghmara Town demanding that the Meghalaya Government provide better power infrastructure for the region by installing the 132 KV grid power supply tower line.

The public rally was organized jointly by the GSU, South Zone, FKJGP, ADE, AHAM, GSMC and others in which students from various schools from Baghmara town participated. Leaders of the various organizations along with students, citizens and local leaders while holding banners and posters undertook a procession through the main thoroughfares of the town to the Deputy Commissioner’s office where a brief meeting took place.

During the brief meeting in the vicinity of the DC’s office, several leaders highlighted to the gathering the poor power scenario in the district. The leaders recounted the frequent power failures especially during the rainy seasons and the low voltage being felt in the town while making a strong demand that the government upscale the power supply being provided in the region.

The leaders rued that despite the issue being raised many times with government officials and public representatives nothing has been done by the government to address the people’s plight and upgrade the power scenario.

“We have submitted countless memorandums to the government but each time they have been overlooked. The 132 KV grid power supply tower line is a must for the district in order for the people to get better service,” the leaders reminded the gathering.

Following the meeting, a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma with the demand for the installation of the same power supply tower line was submitted to Deputy Commissioner F M Dopth in his chamber.
