MGU founder-chancellor, Prez hold talks on state’s educational sector
NONGPOH, Nov 2: Founder-chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University, Dr. Rajan Chopra, recently called on President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan and held talks on the scopes and strategic improvements in Meghalaya’s educational sector. Dr. Chopra, during the meeting, emphasized on delivering free education to the underprivileged section of society in Meghalaya and briefed the President about the welfare schemes announced by the University. Meanwhile, Dr. Chopra has expressed hope that the discussions with the President will open new opportunities in the field of education and vocational training in Meghalaya.

Refresher course in tribal studies
SHILLONG, Nov 2: A two-week refresher course in tribal studies for college and university teachers, organized by UGC-HRDC NEHU, Shillong, got under way on Monday. According to a statement, the inaugural programme for the same was attended by Dean, School of Humanities, NEHU Shillong, Prof. Streamlet Dkhar, as the chief guest. Prof. Dkhar, in her address, stressed on the need to create awareness and to understand the term ‘tribes’, the diverse set of communities, the different diversity in terms of language, physical characteristics, culture and beliefs, and their uniqueness. “She also mentioned that Tribal Studies has a social context such as preservation of culture, multi-disciplinary approach to knowledge and that this programme will help the participants in getting different perspective on Tribal Studies,” the statement said.

Vigilance Awareness Week
SHILLONG, Nov 2: The Vigilance Awareness Week was observed at the NEEPCO Corporate Office and all offices/locations of NEEPCO between October 26 and November 1. According to a statement, various competitions were organised during the weeklong programme to raise awareness on the theme ‘Independent India @ 75: Self Reliance with Integrity’. Banners were also displayed in prominent locations as part of the programme. The Office of the Chief Vigilance Officer, NIT Meghalaya, too observed the weeklong programme during which the speakers touched upon the role of technology to eliminate corruption. An invited lecture through virtual mode, based on the theme ‘Role of ICT to eliminate Corruption in Public life’ was conducted during the weeklong programme. Meanwhile, on the concluding day of the weeklong programme, the North Eastern Council (NEC) distributed prizes to winners of various competitions such as quiz, essay, and talk/short speech, on its premises in the city.

Logs-laden vehicle intercepted
NONGPOH, Nov 2: Members of Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), Jirang Circle, on Monday intercepted a vehicle which was illegally transporting logs to Assam. HNYF leader, Ermender Wahlang, also informed that the group had received information about the presence of illegal sawmills operating under Jirang areas. The HNYF members have also threatened of lodging a complaint with the Ri Bhoi district administration and the Forest department in this regard.
