TURA, Nov 3: Peeved at the recurring incidents of road mishaps involving boulder trucks which, so far, have already led to the loss of three lives from the region, South West Garo Hills-based groups on Wednesday demanded of the state government to put a complete ban on the plying of boulder trucks through the State Highway-12 (Roads), which passes through the district.
In a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, which was submitted through South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ramakrishna Chitturri, the organisations alleged that overspeeding and reckless driving by the truckers have not only led to loss of lives but have also caused damage to the road.
“These trucks ply in complete violation of rules and guidelines. We urge that the plying of the said vehicles through the district be stopped completely to ensure safety of people, safeguard of the environment and prevention of road damage,” the groups said in their memorandum to the chief minister.
Earlier during the day, the groups comprising GSU, FKJGP, AYWO et al organised a protest rally at Ampati during which the group leaders along with the general public were seen carrying banners, posters and placards to demand ban on the plying of trucks.
