SHILLONG, Nov 15: The Indian Golf Union (IGU) along with the Meghalaya Golf Promoters Society (MGPS) and Shillong Club Ltd, in collaboration with the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Meghalaya will be conducting the IGU Shillong Junior Boys Golf Championship from November 15-19 at the Shillong Golf Course as part of the 50th Anniversary of Meghalaya statehood. The national event carries points towards the National Order of Merit for Junior Boys. This is the third time the IGU has scheduled a national event in Shillong.
Two top junior golfers – Shat Mishra and Sagar Uppal – are expected to face stiff challenge from local favourites Siddhant Singhania and Shaurya Goenka who have the advantage of playing at their home course. Along with the duo, Assam’s Ambarish Bora will be the third junior representing North East in this event.
Meghalaya Cabinet Minister, James K Sangma will be the patron for the event and has assured support from the Government of Meghalaya for the sport. AL Hek, MLA, Govt of Meghalaya, an avid golfer and advisor to the Meghalaya Golf Promoters Society has agreed to be the chairman for the event. The IGU is planning to schedule more national events in the North Eastern region in the coming months and has expressed hope of people picking up the game in tier 2 and 3 cities of the region.
IGU, the governing body for golf in the country, aims to promote and develop the game at the grassroots level.
