Farmers receive agricultural tools
SHILLONG, Nov 19: The ICAR — Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ri Bhoi, organised a programme at its office premises on Thursday during which agricultural implements were distributed among farmers. According to a statement, during the awareness-cum-distribution programme, organised in collaboration with Ri Bhoi Farmers Union, the farm implements — wheel hoe and pedal-operated paddy thresher, et al — were provided by Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, under its NEH development programme. The gathering at the programme was urged to take up farm implements to reduce drudgery, enhance output and production. “A total of 15 farmers belonging to two SHGs benefited in the programme,” the statement said.

EKH DC for broad-based learning
SHILLONG, Nov 19: East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Isawanda Laloo, has advocated for broad-based learning to address complex issues. Laloo was speaking as the chief guest at a programme for the release of Fourth volume of the interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journal — ‘Echoes from the Hills’ on the theme ‘The society in a frantic habitat’. During the programme, Research, Innovation and Publication Cell of Shillong College also paid tribute to Late Prof AK Nongkynrih in recognition of his contribution towards inculcating this spirit of research. The college principal, Dr E Kharkongor, in her address, lauded the efforts and contributions of her predecessors who, she said, promoted research activities among the college teachers.

Webinar on career opportunities
SHILLONG, Nov 19: The department of Microbiology, Shillong College, organised a webinar on ‘Career Opportunities in Microbiology’ on Friday. Senior scientist at Gangagen Biotechnologies private limited, Bangalore, Srividya DN, attended the webinar as the resource person.Touching upon the scope in the field of Microbiology, she urged students to also contribute to other fields like medicine, pharmacy, dairy, industry, clinical research, water industry, agriculture, chemical technology and nanotechnology. She also said there is an increase in demand for microbiologists in India and globally.
