SHILLONG, Dec 2: In a bid to keep a check on the spike in petty crimes at Iewduh, especially thefts, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Executive Committee has urged upon the Acting Syiem of Hima Mylliem, Ainam Sing Syiem, to install CCTV cameras at the market.
This transpired during a meeting of the Acting Syiem of Hima Mylliem, his deputies and the East Khasi Hills Police, along with KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Titosstarwell Chyne and Executive Member, in-charge Market, Grace Mary Kharpuri.
The objective of the meeting was to take stock of the crimes at Iewduh.
Speaking to reporters here, the CEM informed them that the Council has asked the Hima Mylliem to install CCTV cameras at the entry and exit of Iewduh, which would help them to identify and nab those involved in robbing people who visit the market.
“We have suggested that the photos of the people who are indulging in these criminal activities be hanged in various shops. This will help the people to be on alert,” he said.
At the meet, the KHADC expressed concern over reports that said there are organised groups comprising men and women that are looting people that come to Iewduh. They also discussed the illegal betting and illegal sale of liquor within the market.
Chyne has also revealed that they had received complaints about people setting up shops in overcrowded areas of Iewduh, even as he added that they have decided to increase the floors of the wholesale vegetable market.
According to the KHADC CEM, the number of theft cases at Iewduh has gone up due to lack of space, which has led to overcrowding.
He added that they have also decided to take stringent measures to bring down theft cases inside Iewduh market with the help of the police and the Enforcement Wing of the Council.
Mentioning that the KHADC had earlier declared Iewduh a plastic-free zone, the KHADC CEM said that they will soon conduct a surprise inspection to find out if illegal sale of plastic bags takes place in Iewduh.
