NONGPOH, Dec 5: In what can be termed a deplorable act, a classroom of a school — Nomiwell Memorial Secondary School, Sajer — located in Nongpoh town was set on fire by miscreants on Sunday evening.
However, thanks to the swift response of the Fire and Emergency Services of Nongpoh the fire was doused before it could spread and cause more damage.
According to residents of the area, some unknown miscreants had broke open the window of one of the classrooms, which was used to store several utilities including mattresses, blankets, and othera items of the Dorbar Shnong of Nongpoh Proper, and attempted to burn down the articles as well as the school.
Fortunately, as the school was located in the heart of Nongpoh town and adjacent to Nongpoh Civil Hospital, many people witnessed the fire billowing out from the classroom following which they informed the Fire & Emergency Services.
As a result of the incident, several important items of the school and Dorbar were partially burnt.
A member of the school managing committee informed that the room earlier was used for kindergarten classes. However, with the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic in the past few years, they used the classroom to store COVID-19-related facilities besides some school items.
An investigation is under way to nab the culprits involved in the incident.
