SHILLONG, Dec 7: The Thma U Rangli Juki (TUR), along with the Meghalaya Domestic Workers Movement, Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association, and Social Accountability Forum for Action and Research, will organise a public hearing on the implementation of ex gratia of Rs 2,100 and Rs 5,000, for workers falling under the unorganised sector who have been adversely affected by the pandemic, under the Chief Minister’s Relief Against Wage Loss, besides workers registered with Meghalaya Building and Other Construction Workers Board.
The hearing is scheduled for 10 AM of December 10 at Cathedral Hall, Laitumukhrah.
A panel consisting of retired Justice of the Supreme Court of India, Justice Madan J Lokur, retired Indian Ambassador and Diplomat, Rudi Warjri, former Chairperson of Meghalaya State Commission for Child Rights, Meena Kharkongor, among other eminent persons will preside over the public hearing.
The objective of this public hearing is to collaboratively address the ‘failures’ in ensuring the disbursement of the financial assistance.
Multiple complaints have been filed by individuals and organisations with the state government seeking redressal of their grievances, but the problems persist, the organisations said.
According to them, the Labour department and the office of the Chief Secretary have also been intimated to participate in the hearing in order that they too have an opportunity to share relevant information and respond to the grievances of the people.
The public hearing is expected to be a public collective forum, open to participation of workers, representatives of unions and other civil society organisations, journalists, lawyers and other stakeholders.
