Headman in Ri-Bhoi dies of assault injuries

NONGPOH, Dec 12: Headman of Korstep village in Ri-Bhoi, who was allegedly beaten by a man hailing from the village, identified as Rajesh Makri, on Sunday succumbed to his injuries at Civil Hospital Nongpoh.
Sources said the incident took place on Tuesday evening while the headman, Florence Lyngdoh, was returning back home after a day’s work at his field which is located nearby the village. However, on reaching the village, Rajesh Makri allegedly beat him black and blue and the headman fell unconscious on the roadside.
He was later shifted to NEIGRIHMS and then to Super Care Hospital in Shillong before he breathed his last at Nongpoh Civil Hospital on Sunday.
A post-mortem examination was also conducted at the Nongpoh Civil Hospital the same day.
(An FIR was filed against the accused on Wednesday on complaint of the family members of the headman. The police, on Saturday, arrested the accused and investigation into the matter is under way.
Meanwhile, Hynniewtrep Youth Council, Umden Circle, who accompanied the victims’ family, have slammed the accused and sought justice for the family of the victim.
