SHILLONG, Dec 14: Peeved at the nearly regular traffic snarls in the city, the Shillong City Congress Committee has resolved to urge the Police department to take measures for easing of traffic congestion in the city.
“The Director General of Police and Superintendent Police (Traffic) of East Khasi Hills should take measures of regulating the traffic throughout the city to ease the traffic congestion. Traffic snarl can be witnessed throughout the day,” the party’s Shillong unit president, PT Sawkmie, told reporters here on Tuesday.
Sawkmie stated that people, who come from Nongthymmai side, Upper Shillong, Mawlai, Polo and other areas of the city, are stuck for hours in traffic jam.
“It takes hours for people to reach from Mylliem to Shillong. The same is the case for people from Ri-Bhoi as they are stuck in traffic jam as soon as they reach Mawiong Rim,” the party unit president said.
According to him, many have stopped bringing their vehicles to the offices due to the traffic jam in Upper Shillong and other areas.
In this regard, he urged the traffic police to take steps to resolve the problems so that the people do not suffer while commuting to and from various parts of the city.
Meanwhile, MPCC working president Pynshngain N Syiem said that the party has also deliberated over the rise in the price of essential of commodities. “We will write to the state government on this matter. We are also planning to organise a protest rally on the price rise during the third week of January next year,” Syiem said.
Sharing similar views, Sawkmie said that the rise in the price of essential commodities has badly affected the poorer sections of the society. “The wages of the daily wagers remain the same. But sadly, the prices of essential commodities continue to rise in the market. We would like to urge upon the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills to take steps to monitor the price of essential commodities. Traders should not be allowed to take advantage of the situation, especially during the festive season,” Sawkmie added.
