Meghalaya off to flying start in basketball natl qualifiers

SHILLONG, Dec 16: Meghalaya got off to a flying start with three wins in both men and women’s categories on the first day of the Senior Nationals Zonal Basketball Championship 2021 here, on Thursday.
The opening game saw Mizoram trounce Tripura 124-8 in the men’s category. Meghalaya men began their campaign with a resounding 72-47 win against Manipur before the women found themselves in the thick of action with a 54-26 victory over Mizoram.
In the fourth game, Assam men defeated Nagaland 97-64. Meghalaya played the last game of the first day in the men’s category, handing Tripura a 104-16 beatdown.
The national qualifying championship is being organised by the Meghalaya Basketball Association (MBA) under the aegis of the Basketball Federation of India at St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School.
A total of six states – Meghalaya, Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur, and Tripura – are competing in the men’s categories, while in the women’s category, Meghalaya, Assam and Mizoram are taking part.
The opening day was attended by the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma who encouraged the participants and wished them success for their future endeavours.
The Chief Minister had also recently inaugurated the upgradation of the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex in the city.
