SHILLONG, Dec 27: A resident of Shillong, Tridip K Mandal, a journalist with The Quint, has been awarded the Ramnath Goenka Award in Journalism in the Uncovering India Invisible category (Broadcast Media) for his documentary, ‘Diaries from the Detention Camps of Assam’.
Tridip, a graduate in Mass Communication from St Anthony’s College here, started his career with The Shillong Times in 2001.
“The Shillong Times will always hold a special place in my heart. It was my initiation into the world of journalism. I worked on the news desk and designing department at The Shillong Times. What I learned here has stayed with me forever,” said Tridip.
Tridip’s story, shot in September 2019, soon after the final list of the NRC was announced, follows the plight of people held at the Goalpara detention camp in Assam on suspicion of being illegal immigrants.
“It’s not a story I have reported on, it’s a story that I have actually lived. Even my family members are out of Assam NRC and the burden of proving our Indian citizenship is still on us. So is the fear of detention camps in the state of Assam,” Mandal says about his story.
