Locals remember U Kiang Nangbah

JOWAI, Dec 30: The Kiang Nangbah Memorial Iasiat Khnam Society in collaboration with the district administration on Thursday observed the 159th death anniversary of Khasi freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah.
The anniversary programme was held in Kiang Nangbah memorial Park, Syntu Ksiar in West Jaintia Hills where social welfare minister, Kyrmen Shylla and Jowai MDC, Saron Pasweth graced the occasion as the chief guest and guest of honour respectively.
Notably, the meeting was presided over by the West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner, LSN Garod Dykes.
Speaking on the occasion, chief guest Shylla stressed on the need to preserve unity among the people of the land.
Reminding that Kiang Nangbah was betrayed by some of his own followers, Shylla urged the people to be united and follow on the footsteps of the legend whose life continues to inspire everyone till date.
In the event, prizes were distributed by the chief guest to the winners of drawing and archery competition.
Meanwhile, the death anniversary was also commemorated by the Sein Raij Jowai in a programme held at Sein Raij Hall, Loompyrdi Jowai.
The NGOs in East Jaintia Hills also observed the death anniversary by organising a rally and floral tributes at Khliehriat in the name of Nangbah.
