Expert team completes inspection on Sonapur bridge, report soon

SHILLONG, Jan 6: A team of experts from National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has finished inspecting the Sonapur bridge in East Jaintia Hills, which has reportedly developed

cracks, and is expected to submit its report to the government within few days.
The experts from New Delhi had arrived to examine the cracks which appeared on the Sonapur bridge, which connects Meghalaya with Cachar district of Assam and other Northeastern states like Agartala and Manipur.
An official at the NHAI informed that a decision will be taken based on the recommendations of the expert team on what should be done with the bridge which has reportedly developed cracks.
Meanwhile, it was also informed that the tender for the construction of the bridge on the Shillong Bypass has been floated and now the construction work for the bridge is expected to start in March.
The official also said that the local contractors who can handle things in a better way should come forward and participate in the tendering process.
He also said that it will not be difficult for local contractors to take up the work as the project cost is around 8-9 crore.
