Statehood celebrations to go ahead

SHILLONG, Jan 7: Amidst the increasing cases of COVID-19, the state government has decided to go ahead with the statehood day celebrations on January 21.
Speaking to media persons after a review meeting, Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong said that the golden jubilee celebrations has to go on and the government has directed the chief secretary and the deputy commissioners to come up with their detailed programmes about the celebrations, while adding that the government will reduce the number of attendees as far as possible.
Making it clear that the golden jubilee celebrations cannot be stopped, he added that they would take a call once the chief secretary and deputy dommissioners submit their detailed programmes.
It may be mentioned that the state has even invited Prime Minister, Narendra Modi to attend the golden jubilee celebrations of Meghalaya but till date, there is no confirmation from the PMO about the visit.
The state government had planned a series of programmes to mark the 50 years of the state but as COVID cases are surging, the government is keeping its finger crossed.
Meanwhile, Tynsong also informed that the government will strengthen COVID-19 testing especially those who are symptomatic.
