Suspected rebel killed in firing near Assam-Manipur border

Guwahati, Jan 11: A man, suspected to be a militant, was killed in firing between two suspected rebel outfits at Rongmei Basti under Jirighat police station in Cachar district on Monday night.

Official sources said the deceased has been identified as David Rongmei (30).

Rongmei Basti is located close to the Assam-Manipur border, about 56 km away from Silchar.

Cachar superintendent of police Ramandeep Kaur, along with a team of state and central police personnel, paid an on-the-spot investigation on Tuesday morning.

Kaur later informed mediapersons that the firing took place between two suspected militant groups and the deceased person is suspected to be a militant.

“On reaching Rongmei Basti, we talked to residents who informed us that all the suspected militants had their faces covered. We are carrying out a thorough investigation,” the SP said.

Meanwhile, security in and around the place of occurrence has been stepped up following the incident of firing.

“The area was already a high-risk zone because of possible movements of suspected militant groups. We have deployed more security personnel now,” she said.

Last month, a similar incident was reported after a 21-year-old youth was critically injured after he was shot at by suspected cadres of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak Muivah) outfit at Chamtilla, Namdailong Punjee in Jirighat.
