Guwahati, Jan 17: An Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Monday delegation met the state director-general of police here and requested him to take immediate action against a ruling party MLA for “threatening” two Assam Police officials, including a woman sub-inspector, asking them not to resort to “police-giri” while discharging official duty.

The Congress delegation led by APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah further requested Assam DGP Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta to register a suo motu case against BJP MLA from Bihpuria constituency, Amiya Kumar Bhuyan, for misbehaving with the on-duty police officials, and apparently asking them, in a way, to digress from official duty.

Two audio clips that went viral on social media on Sunday created quite a stir among “netizens”. Bhuyan was heard, in of of the clips, asking asking the police officer not to resort to ‘policegiri’ and harass people while taking up a case regarding the seizure of a country boat belonging to people from the Mising community.

In the other clip, the MLA was heard shouting at a woman police officer when she questioned the legislator, asking how he, as a people’s representative could ask the police to break the rules, and therefore, how will he be answerable to the government.

Meanwhile, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while taking offence to the MLA’s behaviour, told mediapersons that he has advised him that such conduct, which was seen in the past, should not be repeated.

The APCC delegation further raised the issue of the chief minister publicly scolding Nagaon deputy commissioner Nisarg Hivare for allegedly halting traffic on NH-127 for the chief minister’s convoy to pass on Saturday.

The Congress delegation however stated that the DGP however stayed away from responding to a query on how appropriate it was for the chief minister from publicly rebuking an IAS officer for doing his duty and following protocols in regard to maintaining “Z-plus” security and allowing the chief minister’s convoy to pass.

Earlier, addressing mediapersons here at Rajiv Bhavan, Borah further alleged that a section of “indisciplined, aggressive and terror-loving people are ruling the state.”

“Such high-handedness is also adversely affecting officials in the government along with the common people,” he said.

The APCC chief, on the other hand, took a dig at the chief minister for his statements on holding more by-elections in various constituencies of the state.

“Are by-elections a sign of development? So will by-polls solve key issues of the state such as price rise, unemployment, and inter-state border row?,” he asked.
