Govt extends time for taxpayers to clear dues

SHILLONG, Jan 17: The state Cabinet, on Monday, decided to extend the time for payment of pending liabilities by taxpayers. As such, the Cabinet has approved the proposal to amend the Meghalaya Settlement of Arrears (under the State Taxation Act) Amendment Ordinance 2022, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui informed reporters here.
Rymbui said that the ‘One Time Settlement of Tax’ of the Taxation department is for those that have the liability to pay to the government.
According to the minister, some persons/firms/agencies have already paid some percentage  of tax but have been unable to clear it entirely, while adding that there are some firms which have submitted applications that they were unable to make the payment and the last date for settlement was over. “In view of this, we are giving an opportunity for those who have submitted the application to offer their willingness to clear their pending dues. This ordinance will enable those individuals or traders who have liability to settle their tax,” Rymbui said.
He, however, maintained that this is not the extension of the scheme. “It is just an extension for those people who have expressed their willingness to pay and who have already paid partially their dues to the government,” he said, while adding that the government will be able to generate an amount of Rs 12 crore from the pending cases.
“There are 26 of them who have paid their full dues,” the home minister said.
