TURA, Jan 18: An alert has been sounded by police in West Garo Hills about fraudsters sending fake WhatApp text messages to citizens in an attempt to dupe them off their money and people have been urged to be wary.
According to police, the fraudsters, pretending to be the Deputy Commissioner or the Superintendent of Police, send text messages to unsuspecting citizens from the mobile number 8420621299 with a request to purchase Amazon Gift Cards on one pretext or the other and assuring that the amount would be reimbursed. The fraudsters then ask the victim to send it on his behalf claiming that he is busy in a meeting.
A screenshot of WhatsApp messages with such attempts to dupe people has also been uploaded in the Facebook page of the West Garo Hills Police to warn people.
