NEW DELHI, Jan 24: True to the spirit of the golden jubilee celebrations of Statehood, a colourful tableau of Meghalaya showcasing its 50-year history and tribute to its women-led cooperative societies and self-help groups will roll out on the renovated Rajpath on Republic Day.
A total of 21 tableaux — 12 of various states and Union Territories and nine ministries — will be showcased at the parade this year. Meghalaya’s unique theme on women cooperatives and its golden jubilee year helped in getting permission from the high level experts this year to showcase the tableau.
The tableau will also showcase bamboo and cane handicrafts and Lakadong turmeric which the hill state is known for. The popularity of these products is testimony to the relentless efforts of women-led cooperative society and their contribution to the state economy, said a spokesman from the Ministry of Defense which organises the annual mega event.
The cane and bamboo products including all sorts of furniture have become a good replacement for non-biodegradable plastic and scarce wood. Such items are not just meeting local demand but also exported in huge quantities abroad helping both the women artisans and the government as well, the spokesman said during the full-dress rehearsal of the parade.
Lakadong turmeric from Jaintia Hills is the world’s finest variety of turmeric and is most favoured for its high curcumin content.
The colourful tableau features tribal women artisans as well as their bamboo and cane products. The traditional Wangala drummers of Meghalaya will walk on the side of the tableau when it moves past the stage meant for the President, the Prime Minister, and other dignitaries, many of them from abroad.
What is sure to be the cynosure of all eyes is that the whole tableau itself is made of bamboo and cane. A basket full of Lakadong turmeric hanging on the side of the float will be an added attraction.
