Shillong, Jan 28: The Meghalaya Cabinet today decided on the maximum number of seats to be allotted in the three Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in the state while effecting amendments to the Sixth Schedule, as per the proposal made by the state government for submission to the Centre.
Briefing the media after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma informed the state had proposed that the autonomous district councils in Khasi and Garo Hills shall not have more than 40 members each while the district council in Jaintia Hills shall not have more than 32 members.
He further informed that most of the issues relating to the proposed amendment of the 6th Schedule had already been sorted out by the State Cabinet barring the issues of the number of seats in the District Council and the formation of the Village Council.
In terms of the formation of Village Councils, the cabinet had proposed that these councils would be elected but, the chairman will be ex-officio and, the Headman, Sordar or Nokma will be the de facto chairman.
Meanwhile, the CM would meet his Assam counterpart Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Jan 29 evening to hold talks on the inter-state boundary dispute as part of the ongoing bilateral process to resolve it.
