NONGSTOIN, Jan 28: The swift development of the dilapidated state road running between Nongstoin to Wahkaji has received immense encouragement and support from people.
The 43-kilometre road, which is on its way to being promoted to an intermediate lane under North East Road Sector Development Scheme (NERSDS), has already seen the widening and expansion of about 3 km of the total route in a small time frame.
As per reports, the single-lane road is now under full-fledged construction covering Nongstoin to Wahkaji in phase-A and Wahkaji, Phlangdiloin Langpa up to Ranikor in phase-B.
The 43-km route of phase-A is to be constructed with an estimated amount of Rs 192 crore as the PWD National Highways Division proposed the idea of its construction last year and a Russia-based company, VozrozHdenie, started its work since December 25.
Project Manager of the company, Saurav Dixit, told The Shillong Times that the project will be completed within two years or more since only one major bridge is located in the route at Mawthungkper (Kynroh).
Praising the locals for their cooperation to the project work since the beginning, Dixit also said that the construction camp, machines and other utilities of the project are going to be installed soon near the bridge.
Secretary of the Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong Lailyngdoh area, John Robert Shangrit, thanked the MDA Government for initiating the project. He also also thanked local MLA Macmillan Byrsat for following up on the matter with the concerned authority.
Sahngrit also said that the road from Nongstoin to Wahkaji will, in future, connect the two districts of West and South West Khasi Hills, and will provide a huge relief to people in terms of communicating for education and health-related works.
It may be mentioned that the cabbies of Nongstoin have also lauded the government for starting the road project, as it will also play a crucial role for them in earning a livelihood.
