‘The report against Mawrie is ready and expected to be signed by more than 1,000 party members underlining his failed presidentship. The report has details of how many leaders have resigned from the state level down to the mandals in protest against his leadership’

SHILLONG, Feb 5: The dissident camp in the state Bharatiya Janata Party has compiled a “failed” report against the party’s state president Ernest Mawrie for signing and submitting to the BJP high command.
“The report against Mawrie is ready and expected to be signed by more than 1,000 party members underlining his failed presidentship. The report has details of how many leaders have resigned from the state level down to the mandals in protest against his leadership,” S. Thabah, the BJP’s Ri-Bhoi district president, said.
The report will be submitted to the BJP’s central leadership after the Assembly elections in five states across the country, he said.
“The report highlights the anti-government stance taken by Mawrie and the sudden U-turn, which caused a huge embarrassment to the party while denting its image among the voters at large,” Thabah said.
“As karyakartas, we do not want to divert the central leadership’s attention and energy to our problem when they have a more important task in the states facing immediate elections,” he added.
The dissident group also slammed Mawrie for demanding a CBI probe into alleged scams, terming it an eyewash.
“The whole drama was initiated as a part of a publicity stunt to try and promote his interest as a probable West Shillong candidate. He took the NPP’s help in trying to consolidate his position when the dissident group’s demand for replacing him with AL Hek grew louder,” Thabah said.
He claimed it was not due to Mawrie that Sanbor Shullai was inducted as a minister. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma had taken the step after Hek completed two-and-a-half years as a minister.
The dissidents said the BJP has become a party of businessmen in Meghalaya and not one that takes up people’s issues.
“With Mawrie as president, we are very sure that both the MLAs will quit the party and we will score a duck in the 2023 Assembly elections,” Thabah said.
