SHILLONG, Feb 6: The Nationalist Congress Party, a constituent of the National People’s Party-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, said a think tank group needs to be formed to address the insurgency-related law and order problem in the state.
“The government should have a think tank whose objective would be to maintain peace and harmony in the state,” NCP chief Saleng Sangma said.
Referring to the impasse between the state government and the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council, he said: “The Chief Minister has called for unconditional talks but we are yet to get a response.”
He felt church leaders and civil society groups also need to come together to give suggestions and form a think tank group.
The problem will drag without any initiative, he added.
Sangma advised against politicising the issue or addressing it from the outside, which ends up polarising the youth.
The state has witnessed a series of improvised explosive device blasts, all owned up by the HNLC. After one such blast, the police picked up a juvenile claiming to be the area commander of the outfit.
