Step down if you can’t pay salaries as promised, GHADC CEM told

TURA, Feb 6: The All Garo Hills Joint Action Committee (AGHJAC) on Sunday sought the proper utilization of central funds and royalty in the GHADC and warned that if it is not able to pay the salaries of the employees as promised, its new CEM Rakesh A Sangma should step down from his post.
Calling for unity among all leaders as well as the citizens in a statement, the committee urged all Garo MLAs, MPs and Senior citizens to come together to restore the health of the one and only traditional institution and bring peace and prosperity to the people of Garo Hills as a whole.
The committee also reminded the GHADC authorities of the various pending promises which are yet to be fulfilled while urging the elected members to work towards it.
It observed that a lot needs to be done to safeguard the rights and ethnicity of the Garo people, their tradition and heirloom.
The committee also raised the need to frame proper laws for the GHADC adding, its absence could lead to differences among the A’chik community in future.
It also urged the state government and the elected members of the GHADC to work towards the approval and implementation of the Garo Customary Law (GCL) as well as to prepare a separate electoral roll at the earliest while also seeking the strengthening of the powers and functions of the Nokma.
Earlier, the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) is all set to release four months of pending salaries to its employees.
The salaries are to be released as per the 4th pay commission (pre revised), and will be for the months of October 2019 to January 2020.
In this regard, all the concerned departments, branches and sections have been directed to prepare the bill and submit the same to the Finance Department at the earliest.
