Guwahati, Feb 14: In sync with the intensive drive against drugs, a special squad of Assam Police intercepted an inter-state drugs supply line, seizing contraband substances here on Monday.
A special squad of the Guwahati police and Kamrup police, led by joint commissioner of police (Guwahati), Partha Sarathi Mahanta, launched an operation after tracking a vehicle (Bolero) from Imphal and seized about 0.5 kg of heroin, worth about Rs 4 crore, from the Khanapara area here.
Five accused, all residents of Manipur, have been apprehended, and the vehicle has been seized.
“We were tracking the Bengal-bound Bolero, which came from Imphal, and eventually intercepted the vehicle here. The heroin, weighing little over half kilogram, was concealed in a packet containing rice. Five drugs suppliers from Manipur have been apprehended and the vehicle has been seized,” Mahanta told mediapersons here.
It may be mentioned that the crime branch of Guwahati Police had on Saturday busted an international drugs supply chain, apprehending two Nigerian nationals with 20 grams of cocaine upon arrival at Guwahati Railway Station here by the Rajdhani Express from New Delhi.
The two, who were arrested during an operation led by joint commissioner of police Partha Sarathi Mahanta, had planned to take the contraband drugs to other places in the Northeast, the preliminary investigation revealed.
“We have taken into our custody two Nigerian nationals, identified as Charles Okuakaj and Emmanuel Enuma Dike, after their arrest with the contraband drugs from the Upper Assam-bound Rajdhani Express. They are being interrogated,” a police official informed mediapersons.
“Upon preliminary investigation, we found that had planned to take the consignment to Shillong and other places of the region.
He said that they had been operating the drugs racket for a long time after coming to Delhi using invalid documents.
