120 UDP leaders in Ri-Bhoi quit

NONGPOH, Feb 17: The United Democratic Party (UDP) in Ri-Bhoi was dealt with a political blow on Thursday after 120 of its members, including top leaders of the district, resigned from the party.
Some of the UDP leaders from Ri-Bhoi who tendered their resignation include vice president of Ri Bhoi UDP Rayonald Kharkamni, general secretary of Ri Bhoi UDP Lawrence Nongrum, president of Ri Bhoi UDP youth wing Sumarlang Swer and joint secretary of Ri Bhoi UDP youth wing Phis Narlong.
Speaking to the media persons, the leaders said their decision to leave the party was thoroughly discussed.
They also said that the party, in the past few decades, was not successful in electing an MLA from Nongpoh.
“Therefore, as responsible leaders, we have collectively decided that we have to resign from the party and extend our full support to Macdalyne Sawkmie Mawlong in the upcoming 2023 elections for the welfare and betterment of the people,” Kharkamni said, adding that the outgoing leaders do not see any future in the party.
