SHILLONG, Feb 19: A wave of protest and condemnation against the alleged rape and murder of a minor of Dooars Mal division in West Bengal spilled over to Meghalaya on Saturday with hundreds taking part in the candlelight vigil followed by a condolence meeting here, which was organised by the Bigvory Socio Cultural Club, Nongmensong. “Let us all join hands together to provide justice”, “We condemn this act of violence,” read few of the placards at the venue as participants mourned the alleged rape and killing of a minor even as they demanded justice.
Candles were lit and prayers offered in her memory as they condemned the rape culture. “We are sad to learn that a minor was gang-raped and murdered brutally…we protest this act of violence as this is an act of shame on humankind,” said president of Bigvory Socio Cultural Club, Kamal Sunar.
Hoping that the message will be passed on to others and enable her family to get justice, he said, “We heard the culprits have not been arrested…that is why we conducted this to wake up the conscience of the government of that particular state and speed up the investigation and take strong action.”
