Death of coal workers: Mine owner gets bail

SHILLONG, Feb 21: The owner of the coal mine in Shallang, where two miners from Assam died due to asphyxiation, was granted bail on Monday.
Police said Alfred Rongrin, the coal mine owner, was released on bail with a bond.
Rongrin had surrendered before police on Sunday, three days after the death of the two coal labourers.
According to West Khasi Hills Police the sections under which the case had been registered are bailable and hence he was issued bail.
The two labourers Sukur Ali (35) and Ainuddin Ali (35), residents of Boko, Kamrup in Assam had gone to Langmar coal quarry area to survey the abandoned and unused coal quarry on being instructed by the mine owner and reportedly died inside the quarry due to asphyxiation.
After initial denial, police registered a suo motu case under the MMDR Act at Shallang police station.
