Former GNLA chairman, two others held in FICN case

GUWAHATI, Feb 22: The special squad and an East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) team from Basistha police station busted a fake Indian currency notes (FICN) racket after it intercepted a Bolero bearing registration number ML07 B 7998 on the basis of specific intelligence here on Tuesday, official sources said.
Three persons from Garo Hills – former GNLA chairman Champion R Sangma (46) and Gohanch Sangma (36), both residents of Songsak, and Cherian Momin (28) from Tura, were arrested in connection with the operation of the fake currency racket.
“A thorough search of the vehicle led to recovery of a purported bundle of FICN.
The receiver of the pack – Champion R Sangma – said that the pack was worth Rs 15 lakh. However, the pack had only Rs 10,000 in original currency notes while the rest was white paper,” an official statement said.
“The receiver said he paid Rs 3.5 lakh to one Poresh Das and one Bijay Das at Kamrup Petrol Pump for Rs 15 lakh worth of FICN,” the statement said.
