Guwahati, February 23: The National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 is focused on an inclusive and comprehensive framework that will bring sweeping changes to the Indian education system.
To implement this particular vision of NEP-2020, the University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM) on February 22 conducted a webinar on the topic “Awareness and Sensitization of NEP-2020 for its Implementation”.
The webinar was held in blended mode at the NKC Auditorium of the university and was addressed by Prof. K.R.S. Sambasiva Rao, the Lead Coordinator of Eastern Zone NEP Committee & Vice Chancellor, Mizoram University as the Chief Guest, Prof G. D. Sharma, a Member in the seven-member NEP Eastern Zonal Committee & Vice Chancellor of USTM; Prof. Niranjan Roy from Assam University; Prof. Diwakar Tiwari and Prof. Lalnilawma from Mizoram University apart from other dignitaries and faculty members.
Addressing the participants, Prof. K.R.S. Sambasiva Rao, the Lead Coordinator of Eastern Zone NEP Committee stated that the NEP promises a transformation in the education system making education accessible and equitable at all levels. “Students are to be motivated for skill development courses along with regular curriculum. We are going to conduct state wise meetings in the East Zone and provide practical oriented guidance on how to implement, how to deal with or modify the syllabus and help institutions in whatever possible way”, he said. Two experts on NEP-2020 implementation, Prof. Diwakar Tiwari and Prof. Lalnilawma from Mizoram University gave detailed presentation on how NEP is being implemented in the Mizoram University.
Prof. G. D. Sharma, VC, USTM, said that the UGC has divided the country into 5 zones for implementation purposes of the NEP-2020. “In our Eastern zone, our first objective is to sensitize our faculty members. NEP is a total transformative policy which emphasizes upon multi-disciplinary approach, changing nature of jobs today, quality, affordability, accountability in order to liberalize the system. The policy focuses on Digitalization, Skill Based and Entrepreneurial ventures, flexible program structures, reaffirms the bridging social gaps in access, participation, and learning outcomes through this new education system”, he added.
Prof. Niranjan Roy from Assam University made a presentation on “Roadmap for Implementation Framework” and emphasized that empowering teachers is the first and foremost responsibility of universities. Commending USTM’s incentive award to faculty members for publication in UGC care listed journals he said that flexibility should be there in multi-disciplinary curriculum while focus should be on total quality management.
