Shillong, Feb 26: Students from Meghalaya who are currently stranded in war-torn Ukraine are awaiting instructions to evacuate the country.
While some students are hiding at a bunker somewhere in Zaporizhzhia, others have been asked to take shelter at a college basement.
In a conversation with The Shillong Times this morning, one of the stranded students, Daphibalahun Lyngdoh Mawlong said they were staying at the hostel all this while but following reports of an attack in a nearby city, authorities sounded the alarm, compelling the students to rush to the college basement.
She said there are around 250 students hiding in the basement.
When asked whether the students have received any instruction of vacating the premises and crossing the borders, she said, so far they have only been asked to remain where they are.
It would take 10 to 12 hours for the students to travel from Zaporizhzhia to the Romanian border by bus.
Another student, Richie Kalra said they are awaiting further instruction from the Indian embassy.
It may be mentioned that the first batch of Indian students left Ukraine for Romania and a special flight of Air India AI-1943 landed at Bucharest in Romania for the evacuation of stranded Indians in Ukraine on Saturday morning.
