SHILLONG, Feb 26: The National People’s Party (NPP) on Saturday said the ongoing trouble surrounding the promotion of Rakesh A Sangma as the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) is politically motivated.
MLA and NPP spokesperson, Marcuise N Marak alleged people are being misled on the issue.
He said it has nothing to do with the NPP but the protesters did not give way to Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma to inaugurate a stadium.
Marak said the protestors have been informed of the positive steps taken.
He said the council needs to function as the CEM was elected democratically.
Even for him to step down, the offices have to be opened.
“In spite of knowing all this, they keep on shouting against the CM. They have also started naming NPP. So, this is totally politically motivated,” Marak said.
Stating that many works are pending in the GHADC, which is for the region, and revenue has been lost due to the agitation, he appealed to the protestors to suspend the agitation.
The NPP spokesman said the MDCs will discuss the issue and give a statement after the meeting is over.
“They are trying to mislead the people but the coalition government has always listened and never gone against the public,” Marak said without taking any name.
According to reports, CEM Sangma is likely to resign from the post on Monday to pave the way for the election of a new CEM from among the coalition members.
The NPP spokesperson dismissed the perception that the All India Trinamool Congress is gaining ground in the Garo Hills region. He said people might be saying so because of the present situation in the GHADC.
“NPP is quite strong and has not weakened by these issues. A lot of developmental activities are going on in the entire Garo Hills region as well as elsewhere in the state,” Marak claimed.
“The GHADC issue is not going to affect the NPP in the 2023 polls. I am not against any party and they have every right to protest as it is a democracy,” he added.
