SHILLONG, Feb 27: If all goes according to the vision of the government, life-size statues of Meghalaya’s three bravehearts — U Tirot Sing, U Kiang Nangbah and Pa Togan Sangma — will come up on the premises of the State Central Library here.
Speaking in this regard to this, Principal and Secretary of Art and Culture department, FR Kharkongor, said he has asked the Director of the department to come up with a proposal for the statues. “We are in the process of locating a space within the State Central Library premises to pay a befitting tribute to the three valiant sons,” Kharkongor said.
Shedding more light on the government’s plans, he said that they will involve local artists to design and build the proposed statutes after they receive the proposal from the department.
Kharkongor mentioned that the government also intends to ensure that the young generations can learn about the valiant state heroes.
He has also revealed that the proposed statues will be erected at a centrally located place in the venue.
“This proposal is already in active consideration. It is also part of the yearlong celebration of the 50 years of statehood,” the Principal Secretary said.
It may be mentioned here that idea of erecting life-size statues of these three freedom fighters was first mooted by Cabinet Minister Sanbor Shullai. Moreover, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had also endorsed Shullai’s idea.
