SHILLONG, March 8: The Crime Investigation Department, Meghalaya Police, on Tuesday launched MegCopWatch, a mobile application that has been designed to render quick response by police to women and children in distress.
According to a statement, the mobile application shares the live location of any person in distress to the nearest police station for a “quick and guaranteed response and intervention by the police”.
“The app will help make the state of Meghalaya safe for women and children; it will provide safety for women who are studying, working, staying alone in PGs, hostels, living in remote areas and travelling at odd hours for work. It will also secure children who are living with limited parental supervision as parents have to often be away at work,” the statement added.
The application, which is available in Khasi, English and Hindi, has been launched in Shillong and is to be extended to all the districts in the upcoming months.
The programme was attended by Special DGP, I Nongrang, who, in her address, said the launch of the app is a step further to ensure that response to women and children in distress is prompt and efficient.
She also stated that after the horrific Nirbhaya case in 2012, various other states have come up with different strategies to tackle the problem of women in distress. She went on to express joy over Meghalaya’s coming up with one of its own strategy.
She also exuded confidence in the app to address the issue more efficiently and adequately, and to ensure not just the immediate response but the subsequent response, investigation into the case and the steps to be taken to alleviate the distress of women in every situation.
Others who were present include DP Marak, DIG CID, Meghalaya, Supriya Das, Special SP CID, Meghalaya, and SS Dkhar, Deputy SP, CCW, CID, Meghalaya.
