KVK training on oyster mushroom cultivation
SHILLONG, March 23: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, ICAR, West Garo Hills, organised an awareness-cum-training programme on ‘Year Round Cultivation of Oyster Mushroom under Tribal Sub Plan(TSP)’ on Wednesday. According to a statement, a total of 30 people from Miboldarechikgre, Achapara and Sangsanggre villages attended the training programme. The programme was also attended by West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh as the chief guest who motivated the farmers to opt for mushroom cultivation for livelihood sustenance.

Awareness prog at NEIGRIHMS
SHILLONG, March 23: On the occasion of World Oral Health Day, an awareness programme was held by the department of Dentistry, NEIGRIHMS. The event began with a radio talk on oral health awareness by All India Radio from March 20 by Dr Nathaniel Kharumnuid, followed by a 2.5 kms run held for the MBBS and nursing students of the institute. Later an awareness programme was also held in the OPD foyer area of NEIGRIHMS. Director, Prof (Dr) Nalin Mehta, Dean, Prof (Dr) Asima Bhattacharya, Medical Superintendent, Prof (Dr) C Daniala, Prof & HOD, department of Dentistry, Prof (Dr) S Vijay Singh and Assistant Professor, department of Dentistry, Dr Lomtu were among the ones who attended this programme. Speaking at the event, Dr Nalin Mehta emphasised on topics such as maintaining good oral health and the effects of tobacco smoking on oral cancer.

RBI holds financial literary event
MAIRANG, March 23: As part of the financial inclusion agenda of Reserve Bank of India, a field level Financial Literacy Event was organised by the Shillong branch of RBI at Mairang Mission Dorbar Hall, Mairang on Wednesday. The programme was inaugurated by General Manager and Officer-in-Charge of RBI, P Gangte and attended by around 150 participants comprising farmers, members of SHGs, small entrepreneurs etc. Notably, a total of 67 sanction letters amounting to Rs 1.06 crore from the banks in the area were also handed over to these participants in the event. Officials of RBI, Shillong briefed the participants on the various safety measures and the dos and don’ts for safe digital banking, customer liability in case of fraudulent transactions, grievance redressal mechanism in the banking system, new developments in the field of digital transactions, like UPI, BHIM, USSD.

World Water Day celebrated
SHILLONG, March 23: In keeping with the World Water Day 2022, the Public Health Engineering department of the state organised an event here in State Convention Centre, Shillong on Wednesday. The celebrations were centred around the theme “Groundwater: Making the invisible visible.” As such, the function saw discussions, presentations and exhibitions on the topic by various resource persons as well as participants from different colleges, departments and firms. The programme was presided over by chief guest, Minister, Public Health Engineering department, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar who spoke on “the need to preserve and to ensure the sustainability of water sources in Meghalaya”. Prizes were distributed to all winners of various competitions organised at the event. Villages from East Khasi Hills District, who have attained 100% Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) were also felicitated on Wednesday.

Roads, parking lot inaugurated
SHILLONG, March 23: Two motorable roads cum parking facility were inaugurated by MLA Sanbor Shullai here on Wednesday. The two roads, one, a light motor vehicle road running from PWD main road to the resident of S Paul in Rilbong, and another, road cum parking facility from PWD main road via Sankardev Working Women’s hostel up to Kench’s Trace road at Rilbong were constructed with an amount of Rs 43 lakhs under SUWP scheme 2020-21. A joint inspection was also conducted at Rilbong Brookside Temporary Assembly campus for the proposed construction of Rabindranath Tagore Cultural Centre cum Museum and library. Others who were present include Rangbah Shnong of Kench’s Trace, Oxford Hills, Glanding Lyngdoh and others.

Police get training on Tobacco Act
SHILLONG, March 23: The police officers of the East Khasi Hills district police received hands-on training on Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) here on Wednesday. The training session which was held by the National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP), Department of Health in collaboration with Sambandh Health Foundation (SHF) saw discussions on the ill effects of tobacco smoking as well as upon various legal provisions in India which prohibit tobacco consumption. As part of the programme, all police stations were asked to install ‘No Smoking’ signs.
