SHILLONG, March 27: In an attempt to widen its reach in Meghalaya, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) formed its Block Committee in Pynursla, East Khasi Hills district, on Saturday. A formal oath-taking ceremony was held at the Neng Gate Hall in the presence of AITC state vice-president James Lyngdoh.
Jiten Khongwieng was sworn in as the president of the block committee while Playness Khiewtan became the general secretary. The block committee comprises 15 members.
The block committee members — Jiten Khongwieng and Playness Khiewtan — reposed faith in the leadership of state AITC.
The general secretary of the committee criticised the government for deprivation of development in the constituency. “With AITC, there comes a new hope and promise for a better future for the people of Pynursla,” he said.
Present on the occasion, former Youth Congress president, Bansharai Pyngrope, who is all set to join AITC, took a hit at the ruling party for misinforming people about AITC as foreign to Meghalaya. He pointed out that Conrad Sangma’s father and former Chief Minister, PA Sangma, was an elected MP from AITC back in his days. Chief guest James Lyngdoh attacked the BJP government at the Centre for relentlessly passing bills against the interests of the people of the country.
Taking a shot at the NPP in Meghalaya, he criticised the NPP for its ‘hypocrisy’ on the farmers’ issues in the Assembly and siding with the ‘anti-farmer party’ — BJP.
