TURA, March 27: The Phulbari Garo Students’ Committee (PGSC) on Sunday raised opposition to the reconstitution of the local unit of the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) by the Union’s CEC in Tura terming its formation as illegal and in violation of the Union’s constitution.
In a statement issued here, the committee said that the regional unit which had been functional for more than 10 years was dissolved by the GSU, Western Zone North, Dadenggre, but it was forcefully reconstituted recently by the GSU CEC.
“Our demand is that proper election should be held to reconstitute the regional unit. There has been no election to elect leaders for the unit for more than 10 or 15 years and that is why the PGSC was formed. However, the unit was recently reconstituted with the same members by the CEC and we cannot accept that,” George Ellioth R Marak, president of the PGSC, said.
There has been infighting within the GSU with two zonal bodies staking claim over the Phulbari regional unit. The GSU, Western Zone North, Dadenggre recently, while opposing the CEC’s approval of the old office-bearers had announced an election to be held next month. However, the declaration of the election was challenged by the Western Zone West, Raksamgre, who claim that the unit comes under it and has to be approved by the CEC in Tura.
