Meet on HIV, AIDS programme
SHILLONG, April 7: The 2nd Joint Working Group meeting between North Eastern Council (NEC) and National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) was organised on Wednesday organised by Meghalaya AIDS Control Society, at NEC Secretariat, Shillong. According to a statement, the agendas that were taken up during the meeting were “the objective, functions and mechanism of HIV and AIDS programme, and the impact of HIV infections in India, especially in the North East”. The meeting was attended by NEC Secretary K Moses Chalai, NACO Director Nidhi Kesarwani, Project Directors of State AIDS Control Society of all Northeastern states, among other prominent officials. “This meeting, as envisaged, will strengthen the HIV and AIDS programme through liaison, forming collaborative machinery and other functions between NEC, NACO and State AIDS Control Society of 8 Northeastern states to combat the HIV infection, stigma and discrimination, and to uplift and strengthen the community affected by HIV and AIDS,” the statement informed.
Farmers get sericulture materials
SHILLONG, April 7: In a bid to augment cocoon production, as many as 10 beneficiaries in Thadmusem and Kdiap, Bamthong and Moorap villages in Jaintia Hills were on Thursday provided equipment and items to facilitate sericulture by the Research Extension Centre, Shillong, in association with DSO, West Jaintia Hills, Department of Sericulture and Weaving under the Central Sericulture Research and Training Institute-Berhampore (Central Silk Board) assisted Transfer of Technology (TOT) — On Farm Trial (OFT) scheme for 2021-22. Under the distribution programme, materials like plastic collapsible mountages, HDPE bed cleaning nets, disinfectants such as bleaching powder and lime powder as well as cash incentives through Direct Benefit Transfer for shoot feeding stands and bed disinfectants were given to the beneficiaries. The farmers were also explained the technology and method and benefits of using the technology.
Training on carpentry for youths
NONGSTOIN, April 7: A three-month training programme on carpentry got under way in Nongstoin on Wednesday. Organised by the GRASSROOT in collaboration with Don Bosco Tech, Nongstoin, the inaugural event of the training programme was attended by officials from NABARD and District Commerce & Industries Centres, members of Don Bosco Tech, Nongstoin, and Carpentry Association, and 30 trainees from West Khasi Hills and Eastern West Khasi Hills. The training programme is part of the project on sustainable livelihood and income generation for youths, supported by NABARD and implemented by GRASSROOT. It is also being organised as part of GRASSROOT’s objective to imbibe entrepreneurial and livelihood generation skills among the youths of Meghalaya. NABARD DGM lipa Dweri, who was the chief guest, encouraged the trainees to get the most out of the training programme for their future livelihood opportunities. She also exhorted the trainees to exhibit discipline and learn with tenacity so that they can become job creators and not job seekers.
