NEW DELHI/TURA, April 9: Tura MP and former Union Minister, Agatha Sangma, has written to the Union Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, urging the Centre to set up of at least one centre in Tura for Common University Entrance Test CUET (UG) for the academic year 2022-23, which will be held online in July this year.
In her letter to Pradhan, Agatha highlighted that despite the state having three centres, there was none in the Garo Hills region. The letter was sent on Saturday.
She urged the minister to direct the National Testing Agency (NTA) to take steps to set up at least one CUET (UG) centre in Tura.
For the first time, the NTA is conducting Common University Entrance Test 2022 (CUET 2022) for admission to undergraduate courses in central universities for the academic session 2022-23. NTA has started the registration process for the test and the last date to apply is May 6, 2022.
The test itself has caused concern in North East and other states of India in general. Education ministers of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh have questioned the interests of domiciles in seeking admissions to central universities in the region. “Uniform policies must not be imposed on states without considering the difference in local needs, challenges, and aspirations, the two ministers have said.
They urged the Ministry that while determining and designing the new admission process, the Ministry of Education should account for the limitations of centralised tests, and take requisite steps to protect the interest of students, especially from the North East.
But the University Grants Commission (UGC) has said the test will provide equal opportunities to every student. There will be enough time for students to see if there is any difference between NCERT syllabus and their syllabus, and prepare for it, the UGC had said.
