Meghalaya, a Christian-dominated state, is home to different denominations and infrastructural marvels, some of which date back to the 19th century. In the third episode of Shillong’s Iconic Structures, we are featuring the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians – a church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Shillong.
With a beautiful Grotto down in front, the stairs on both sides, and the Calvary across the road, the majestic and imposing Cathedral at Laitumkhrah radiates a serene and prayerful atmosphere, attracting visitors and tourists. The history of the Cathedral is linked with the history of the Catholic Church in the Northeast, with Shillong as its centre. Historically, the hill where the cathedral is located was purchased by a
Salvatorian missionary, Angelus Muenzloher for a measly sum of Rs 5000 in the 1890s. With the exit of the Salvatorian missionaries, the Salesian priests took charge of the mission and at present, the Cathedral is under Shillong Diocese’s care.
The Cathedral went through two natural calamities – the great earthquake and the devastating fire. First, the Shillong earthquake of 1897 and, second was a devastating fire in 1936, when it was burnt to the ground. Following these calamities, the Cathedral was rebuilt and interestingly, after which this massive structure is now built on sand as protection from earthquakes. The foundation for the new Cathedral was blessed on October 25, 1936. However, resurrecting both the times, a new sense of hope prevailed and with it, a
renewed mission and vision.
There is a saying that Faith can move mountains; and it has never proven truer than in this case – where the determination to bring people closer to God, be it in the form of worship at a Church building or charitable services, has triumphed over any adversities.
Special Thanks to the Archbishop’s House and Parish Priest, Fr Pascal Lyngdoh
