SHILLONG, April 10: Suspended Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader, Ampareen Lyngdoh took a swipe at the All India Trinamool Congress leaders for inciting disgruntled villages along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
There has been enough confusion on the border and political parties should refrain from stirring unrest past the agreement between the two states, she said.
Senior AITC leader, Mukul M Sangma had recently visited a few border villages and tried to highlight the unwillingness of some disgruntled villagers to be a part of Assam.
“It is very unfortunate that every time when an election nears, everybody in Meghalaya becomes very patriotic. I feel all political parties should welcome welcome the way the first phase of the border discussion with Assam has concluded,” Lyngdoh said.
She said the second phase of the discussion is still left and the stakeholders should petition the Centre, the arbitrator for the interstate boundary issue, instead of fanning trouble with an eye on the elections.
“The Meghalaya CM is correct in saying it is beyond his purview as the matter has been taken to Delhi. These groups should either have attended the hearings prior to the memorandum of understanding or approached the Centre as the CMs of the two states cannot go back on the agreement,” Lyngdoh said.
She said if the opposition camp was so serious about the border issue, its leaders should have been present when the regional committees had gone to the ground instead of parading on the border to appear to be the saviour of Meghalaya.
Lyngdoh said any party or group unhappy with the border pact on six of the 12 areas of dispute should knock on the Centre’s door and let it decide.
